Strawberries – How to Multiply your Number of Strawberry Plants Next Year

Do you love strawberries? Yes! I do too and I love a freebie or two. Strawberries are one of the fruiting plants that love to give the gift of more plants year after year.

How do I get more Strawberry plants next year?

Well I’m glad you asked, I’ve just finished potting up about 11 new strawberry plants ready for next year. Where have I conjured these up from? No magic here, just new growth in the form of what’s called a Strawberry Runner.

A Strawberry Runner is a long shoot that comes from the crown (center) of the plant that essentially is making a few more baby plants along the runner.

You’ll see a 1 – 3 new strawberry plants along a new runner. If you have quite a few runners, do the math with 3 plants per runner, you’ll be quids in, there will be coins in your purse and you’ll have new strawberry plants for next year – Win, Win!

What do I do with the new plants from the Strawberry Runners?

It’s quite easy. If you have your strawberries in raised beds or a border or a container, you’ll might find they have already sent out runners and if you lift the new plants out of the soil, you may see roots.

Roots are what you need to plant them in new pots with compost and then cut the umbilical cord or strawberry runner to get your new baby strawberry plant for next year.

Keep them watered, they can stay outside or inside a mini greenhouse.

Planting Onions (from seed) in a Raised Bed

It’s mid April and time to plant out the Onions I grew from seed in January. It’s a fairly simple process of removing the onions from their modules and planting out in a hole in the soil. There’s a few things you should know about transplanting onions: Prepare your raised beds with compost, either a) Dig a trench and add compost into it. Onions are shallow rooted so the roots will sit in the compost. OR b) Use the No Dig method and add to the top of the soil and rake it until it’s level with no clumps. The microorganisms and rain will take the nutrients into the soil. Plant your onions by removing from their cells, placing them out on the soil to find the spacing requirements.
