Vegetables To Sow & Plant in September
“By all these lovely tokens, September days are here. With summer’s best of weather and autumn’s best of cheer.” – Quote by Helen Hunt Jackson.
In the UK, September seems to be a mixture of a last minute Indian summer and autumn trying to push in as well.
There’s still a few things you can sow and plant in September.

What I’m Sowing in September
Spring Cabbage ‘April’
I’ll be sowing Spring Cabbage ‘April’ in the first week of September for a Spring Harvest.
Spring Cabbage ‘April’ is a compact dwarf variety which can be planted 25cm away from another plant. It is also bolt resistant which is great for those Indian summers that roll on into October, I was talking about earlier. This variety won’t bolt in heat.
With the close spacing and bolt resistance, this is great choice for growing in my raised beds.
I start these off in pots in the greenhouse and plant out by the end of September.
Vegetables already started for Winter

- Christmas Potatoes,
- Cauliflower ‘All Year Round’ plug plants,
- Kale ‘Cavolo Nero‘ plug plants,
- Brussels Sprouts ‘Eversham’ plug plants,
- Brussels Sprouts Plant with Brussels forming, sowed 6 April, still going, just.
