Vegetable Seeds to Sow in October & Halloween Bulls Blood Leaf Bowl

You may be surprised to know that there are vegetable seeds you can sow in October.

Overwintering Vegetables

Most of the seeds and bulbs planted in October are to be overwintered which means to survive the winter and to be harvested in Spring.

  • Onions – Autumn Planting Onions or Shallots can be planted into cell trays in the greenhouse for planting out later or can be planted straight into the soil. Be careful planting in waterlogged soil as bulbs may rot. Grab my Guide to Growing Onions & Shallots from Sets here.
  • Garlic – Autumn Planting Garlic and Elephant Garlic can be planted directly into the ground in October to December. the sooner they are in the soil the sooner they experience a cold period which is what they need to fatten the cloves. I’ll be planting my Garlic & Elephant Garlic in Mid October.
  • Broad Beans – Sow Autumn Sowing Broad Beans like Aquadulce direct into the ground to overwinter for next year. Early sowings can mean earlier harvesting in May instead of June. See my FREE PDF Planting Checklist to help you grow Broad Beans.
  • Peas – Sow Autumn Peas like Douce Provence direct into the ground or a pot in the greenhouse (bring outside when flowering) for overwintering to get a very early Peas Harvest!

Vegetables to Harvest this year

If you are looking for quick harvests before the end of December, then this is your month to sow a Winter Spooky Salad bowl of Lettuce and leaves.

Halloween Winter Salad Bowl

You Will Need:

  1. A Cauldron Planter (black low wide planter with legs),
  2. A Packet of Micro or Baby Leaves Mix Seeds – add some Bulls Blood (beetroot) leaves and red veined Mustard leaves for a spicy kick.
  3. Compost to fill the planter.
  4. Watering Can and water.

Method

  1. Fill the Cauldron Planter with compost.
  2. Open the Seed Packet of mixed Baby Leaves.
  3. Scatter the seeds all over the surface of the compost.
  4. Cover the seeds with a thin layer compost.
  5. Water your Seeds well.

Planting Onions (from seed) in a Raised Bed

It’s mid April and time to plant out the Onions I grew from seed in January. It’s a fairly simple process of removing the onions from their modules and planting out in a hole in the soil. There’s a few things you should know about transplanting onions: Prepare your raised beds with compost, either a) Dig a trench and add compost into it. Onions are shallow rooted so the roots will sit in the compost. OR b) Use the No Dig method and add to the top of the soil and rake it until it’s level with no clumps. The microorganisms and rain will take the nutrients into the soil. Plant your onions by removing from their cells, placing them out on the soil to find the spacing requirements.
