Veg Trends & Inspiration

Trending… Seed Snails

Have you heard about the Seed Snail trend that’s changing the way seeds are sown?

You will need a long strip of material, compost, a little bit of water & seeds. Sow and roll up into a spiral shape.

Some Seed Snails are made with plastic but I liked this one made with linen for a plastic free idea.

Grow Veg & Fruit from the Supermarket

A new book called Grow Your Groceries has sparked my attention, as you can try growing strawberries & other veg from the supermarket.

Strawberries – Cut a slither off, dry on a paper towel and brush off the seeds into compost. Simple!

I might give this ago as we need some more strawberries this year. They will fruit in their 2nd year.

Pea & Bean Walls

I’m thinking of growing my Peas on a Pea Wall this year. I’ve bought a tall variety called Telephone at 1.8m high. I need a support structure of a wall or a vertical structure.

I’ve been doing some research and found the following inspirational structures.

Pea Trellis: Caleb’s.Plants

Pea Wall: thePurposefulYou

String Pea Trellis: seattleurbanfarmco

Making Haws Watering Cans

Ever wondered how the iconic Haws Watering Cans are made?

They are handmade, metal, and long lasting.

Ourdaleyhome has gone behind the scenes to the Haws Watering Can Factory to see the hands on manufacturing process.

Vegetables to Sow in March

Vegetables to Grow in March

It’s March, the light levels are getting longer, the sun is shining more but it is still cold and there’s still a chance of frost and even snow!

Check out the Seed Sowing HQ for March for veg to sow, jobs to do and what’s happening in the Veg Garden in March.

Start Lettuce and Spinach – in Modules in the greenhouse

Start sowing early leafy vegetables in the greenhouse in modules like lettuce and spinach for a quick early crop.

I’m sowing Lettuce – Black Seeded Simpson which is good down to minus 5 degrees centigrade.

I’m also sowing Spinach – Harp F1, it’s a winter spinach so loves the cold, just not frost.

Nothing can beat Early Peas, sow now in Early March for an early harvest in Late May. I’m sowing a classic cold loving variety which you can also sow over winter called Douce Provence.

I’m sowing my peas in Root Trainers like I do every year.

The Veg Garden in March

Shallots ready to be planted in Garlic Raised Bed

What’s happening in the Sow Grow Harvest Veg Garden?

In the Raised Beds

  • Cauliflower – Last one’s Harvested.
  • Kale – The last of the Kale tips are nearly ready too.
  • Brussels sprouts are starting to grow upwards.
  • Shallots have been planted outside in the Garlic Bed.
  • Calendula flower seeds have been sown at the end of the Shallots and garlic bed for colour and pest control.
  • Spring Cabbages are growing more leaves in pots in the greenhouse. They are in pots as there was no raised bed space to put them.
  • Giant Allium bulbs are coming up, I thought they would be a great feature at the back of 3 of my raised beds as they are about 1 meter high. They will look fantastic in white and pink and will also attract bees straight into the raised beds for pea and bean pollinating.

In the Greenhouse

  • Sweet Peas have germinated.
  • Lettuce & Spinach sown last week, not germinated yet.
  • 20 Onion Seedlings that were potted on 20 Feb.
  • 6 x Cauliflower Seedlings potted on 1 March.
  • Chive plants overwintered from last year, green growth appearing.

On the Kitchen Windowsill

  • Summer Cabbage seedlings to be potted on shortly,
  • Aubergine & Sweet Pepper seeds sown on 28 Feb – not germinated yet.

Beginner Vegetable Journal

Here is my Page Turning Video – it shows you what is in the Journal.

Please turn on your sound to hear the commentary.

Beginner Vegetable Journal – Page Flick Through Video

I’m excited to announce my New Beginner Vegetable Journal which has already been very useful in recording the dates of new sowings and veg potted on.

You will be seeing it in videos on Instagram but if you want to see what is in my journal, click here to view the flick through video.

I like to keep a detailed record of all my vegetable growing. Then I will be able to refer back to this journal next year which will help with improvement and success with crops in the future.
