It’s going to be a busy month in the Seed Sowing Headquarters at Sow Grow Harvest Veg in April.
April is the month to Get Seed Sowing!
Reasons why:
- The light levels are higher – daylight hours are 13 hours rising to 15 hours by the end of April,
- The temperature is warmer – The average temperature is between 9 and 14 degrees centigrade in April in the UK.
- A wider range of vegetables, herbs, flowers and wildflowers can be sown in these conditions.
- Germination rates are good due to light and warmer weather.
- Seeds can now be sown directly into the soil in April, as by the end of April, the risk of frost has mostly passed.
Seeds To Sow in April

Peas

If you have already sown some Peas in March, fantastic! This month is the time to plant them out around a few bamboo poles for support in raised beds or containers. Watch for pigeons! They chew up your peas and pull at the plants, here’s some advice on this pest.
April is the time to Sow your Maincrop Peas. These are taller Peas and take a few weeks longer to grow than dwarf Peas. You’ll definitely need a Pea Wall, Obelisk or Arch to grow these taller Peas up.
Maincrop Pea Varieties
- For Pretty Pea Flowers – Try: Rosakrone (Swedish with pink, white and red flowers) from RealSeeds.
- For Very Tall Varieties (2 to 3.5 meters) – Telephone, Champion of England, Lord Leicester, Ambassador.
- For Dwarf Varieties (under 60cm high) – Charlie from MoreVeg.
Root Veg like Carrots, Beetroot
Root vegetables like a long time in the ground, so it’s best to start sowing in April, so they will be ready by Late July or August.
Sow Carrots, Beetroots and Parsnip seeds direct into the soil in April. Keep them well watered to activate these seeds.

Fancy a change of Beetroot variety? Try these colourful alternatives:
