Want Peas in May? Sow Seeds in March

If you are quick off the mark in March, you’ll be reaping the rewards in Late May. In this post, I’ll be letting you know the seeds you can sow in March that will be ready for a Harvest in just two months!

As it’s April next month, the most popular month for sowing seeds, you may want to get a few sowings out of the way this month, so it’s not as busy next month.

Quick Growing Peas

Dwarf Peas

Dwarf Peas are quicker to grow than tall peas, therefore they also give you a quicker harvest as well. I’m not saying don’t grow tall peas, just get the timing right. I sow dwarf peas in March and then tall maincrop peas in Late April.

Dwarf Pea – 1st Early Varieties:

  • Pea – Douce Provence- 40-60cm high. I’m sowing this variety in my video below.
  • Pea – Avola – 60cm high.
  • Pea – Meteor – 45cm high.
  • Pea – Karina – 50-60cm high.
  • Pea – Kelvedon Wonder – 45-60cm high.

How to Sow Peas

Peas do not like their roots disturbed when you plant them outside. This is why sowing in root trainers helps the peas grow a healthy root system and when you plant them outside the soil tends to stay round the roots.

You will need:

  • Root Trainers

What are Root-trainers? A Long deep pot that folds like a book and sits in a tray. See video for explanation.

  • Pots 9cm diameter – if you haven’t got root trainers, these pots will be fine. Or Guttering – some people grow peas in compost in a length of guttering, so they can slide them into a trough in raised beds when they need planting outside.
  • Multipurpose compost,
  • Pea Seeds
  • A Dibber or pencil to make holes for the peas.
  • Small Watering Can or jug with water.

Planting Onions (from seed) in a Raised Bed

It’s mid April and time to plant out the Onions I grew from seed in January. It’s a fairly simple process of removing the onions from their modules and planting out in a hole in the soil. There’s a few things you should know about transplanting onions: Prepare your raised beds with compost, either a) Dig a trench and add compost into it. Onions are shallow rooted so the roots will sit in the compost. OR b) Use the No Dig method and add to the top of the soil and rake it until it’s level with no clumps. The microorganisms and rain will take the nutrients into the soil. Plant your onions by removing from their cells, placing them out on the soil to find the spacing requirements. Then dig one hole per onion seedling to plant them in. Plant them in the soil from their modules and try not to disturb the roots.
