Can you Grow Carrots in Pots?

Yes! you can grow a lot of vegetables in containers including carrots.

Other Vegetables I’ve grown in a container are:

Butternut Squash – this year I’m growing a bush variety perfect for a large pot.

Spring Cabbage – 1 per 30L pot in the greenhouse overwinter worked brilliantly.

Peas – Add some bamboo canes and peas are ready to grow. Either sow seeds direct into the soil or sow in modules first to get stronger before planting out.

Potatoes – Every year I grow Potatoes in pots, to get a good harvest, you’ll need a few containers of potatoes.

Things to Consider when Growing Carrots in Pots

1. Depth – Carrots need a depth of at least 30cm,

2. Width – Carrots will need a bit of space next to one another, so choose a wide pot.

3. Drainage – Raise the pot off the ground using pot feet. I love these invisible rubber feet because they don’t mark your patio.

4. Little to No Nutrients – Carrots love spent (old) compost with little to no nutrients in it. They hate fresh compost. If you have any leftover compost that you have grown potatoes in, use that to sow carrots in, they will love it!

5. Watering – Carrots like wet soil to germinate, they are slow to germinate but need the moisture to activate their seeds. After that you’ll only need to water them during long dry periods.

6. Sunlight – Sunlight and water are consistently important when getting your seeds growing. Carrots take up to 3 weeks to germinate.

Sowing Carrots in Pots

Sow Months: February to August.

Time to Germinate: Up to 3 weeks, keep moist and near sunlight. Ideally 13-24 degrees centigrade in temperature.

Time To Harvest: Baby Carrots – 4-6 weeks & Full Size Carrots – 3-4 Months.

Seed Depth: Seeds to be sown 0.5cm to 1cm deep in the soil. Cover with compost.

Ideal Soil: Top Soil with horticultural sand or spent (old) compost. They dislike nutrient rich soils.

Pot Size: Ideal Size – 30L, depth minimum 30cm.

Watering Plan: Water well until germination. They are tolerant to little or no water but don’t like to dry out completely so water well in dry hot periods.

If you are looking for the perfect pot to grow your container veggies in.

I use Oakland 30L Black Plant Pots with handles. These are a perfect size to grow a range of vegetables. The handles help lift the pots around the patio. The pots are sturdy and have drainage holes in the bottom.
