Black Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe
Yes I know the real title of the movie is Fried Green Tomatoes at the Whistle Stop Cafe but what if it wasn’t. What if Black Tomatoes were put front and centre stage of this film, would they be any more popular than green tomatoes?!
Why should you even consider growing Black Tomatoes?
Great question, I know they might look weird and your brains going ‘no no no’ just stick to the red ones, that’s what colour they should be.
Hear me out on this one, there might be a few reasons why you might consider growing Black Tomatoes. After all, they have enticed me in to grow them!
- Antioxidants – They contain more antioxidants than red tomatoes. The same antioxidant that is in blueberries.
- Nutrients – They have more vitamin A & C than Red tomatoes.
- Sweeter – They are sweeter (which does mean more acidic) than red tomatoes.
5 Things to know if you want to Grow Black Tomatoes
- They are slower to germinate (up to 21 days or 3 weeks) than red tomatoes so try and sow in April.
- They are slower to ripen than red tomatoes.
- Black tomatoes grow black or a browny purple colour and ripen to red.
- The ripening process starts at the bottom of the Tomato and goes upwards. So the bottom will turn Reddy brown first.
- To get a true black Tomato, make sure your tomatoes are in full sunlight so you get a deeper colour. Tomatoes grown in partial shade will be redder.
